Mau Panther (Black)

Mau Panther (Black)

Cats, known in ancient Kemet (Egypt) as "Mau," were considered sacred in this ancient African society.

The ancient Africans in what we now call Egypt held cats in the highest esteem. They worshipped a Cat Goddess, often represented as half feline, half woman, whom they called Bastet.

The cat goddess Bastet (also known as Bast) eventually replaced Mafdet. As early as the First Dynasty, Mafdet has been considered the goddess of judgment, justice, and execution. Bast's image softened over time and she became the deity representing protection, fertility, and motherhood.

Bast was a goddess of the sun throughout most of this ancient African history, but later when she was changed into a Cat Goddess.
